Electric: Hawaiian Electric (808) 329-3584 is the Kona customer-service number, with customer service available Monday–Friday, 7:30 a.m.–6 p.m.
Water: The County Department of Water Supply Kona office is (808) 322-0600, while customer service/account questions are handled at (808) 961-8060.
Sewer: County wastewater billing is (808) 961-8338.
Trash: Hawaiʻi County does not provide curbside household rubbish collection; it tells residents to use private haulers. PFI is one of the principal West Hawaiʻi residential providers and specifically serves Kailua-Kona and surrounding communities.
PFI's current website says sellers needing to terminate/change service should contact its office before the next service period begins.
Gas/propane: Hawaiʻi Gas distributes LPG/propane. Its Big Island customer service number is (808) 935-0021.
Don't forget these if applicable
These aren't necessarily "utilities," but they're accounts you should also put on a seller's closing checklist:
- Solar/PV system — If the house has leased solar, a PPA, battery storage, or a solar loan, contact the solar company. Do not simply cancel it; the agreement may need to be transferred to the buyer or paid off at closing.
- Private water system — Some developments, resorts, or subdivisions have a private water company rather than County DWS.
- Private wastewater/septic/cesspool — Properties not connected to County sewer may have a septic/cesspool service arrangement instead.
- Security/alarm monitoring
- Pool service
- Lawn/landscaping service
- Pest control
- Water delivery
- Home service contracts
Some things I would not cancel early:
For a normal residential sale, don't shut off electricity, water, or sewer before closing unless your escrow/title company or agent specifically tells you to. The property generally needs utilities functioning for inspections, final walkthrough, and the buyer's due diligence.
